Research

I study the use of the APPETIZING FOOD metaphor to conceptualize attraction in different languages.

We approach metaphor as a cognitive process by which we construct knowledge and use in our interactions with the reality that surrounds us. From a Critical Socio-Cognitive Metaphor Analysis perspective (Romano, 2024), metaphor is not a neutral linguistic choice; it reflects speakers’ attitudes and ideologies (Hart, 2018). Metaphors serve a pragmatic function by framing reality (Gibbs et al., 2011; Gibbs, 2023). They reflect the way speakers construe different sociocultural matters. Therefore, examining them offers insight into how sociocultural values are reproduced through our linguistic choices when we communicate.
